Skincare explained: Cream or Lotion?

You may ask yourself what is the difference between lotion and cream? Well, although there are some features that define lotions versus creams, they are both still types of moisturizer intended to hydrate and soothe your skin. 

So let’s break it down... 

A lotion typically has much more water than a cream. Most of the time, lotions only have a couple of drops of oil and the rest is water, since they are  meant to feel lighter on the skin, and designed to be used for the whole body. The water base makes it easy for the product to spread and easily absorb into your skin. 

Cream, on the other hand, is usually about a 50/50 blend of water and oil. Since creams have more oil than lotion they tend to be a bit thicker and greasier when applying to your skin. Usually creams are found in tubs instead of bottles because they are heavier formulations.

Since a lotion is so lightweight it’s a great use for summertime when you don’t want that greasy feeling. During the summer your skin is being hydrated by your sweat and the humidity in the air. Your skin tends to be much more hydrated during the hotter months. Whereas, cream is thick and oily, making it perfect for the colder months. The cream will create an extra barrier on the skin and get the hydration your skin is yearning for.

At the end of the day everyone has a different need for what they are putting on their body.
