What’s Up With Sudden Dry Skin?

Words By Martina

You feel young and youthful, your skin is soft, smooth and just darn close to perfect! One day you wake up to find your skin dry, irritated and anything but perfect. What’s going on? What causes sudden dry skin and what can you do about it?

Causes of Sudden Dry Skin

Dry skin isn’t usually anything to worry about but you do want to fix the problem as soon as possible so that your skin can go back to being healthy, hydrated and comfortable. But how can you fix it if you don’t know what the problem is in the first place? Worry no more because we are about to tell you some of the most common causes of dry skin and what you can do about it.

Hot Water

If you use a lot of hot water, this can dry out your skin. Think of all the baths, showers and general chores you might do that use water. This includes washing dishes, washing your hands and washing your face. What temperature is the water when you use it? Opt for warm to cool water to help keep your skin from drying out.

Dry Air

Depending on the seasons, the air humidity can change drastically and that can really affect the moisture of your skin. Especially in the winter, if the air around you is very dry, consider investing in a humidifier to stop your skin from shriveling up in desert-like conditions.

Fragrances

This is a sneaky one because fragrances are hidden in so many products we use. Did you know that fragrances, even though they might smell unbelievably welcoming, can really harm your skin? A product that just lists ‘fragrance’ as an ingredient is basically telling you that it smells nice but you have no idea what the ingredient is actually made of. More often than not, these ingredients can really irritate our skin and cause it to feel dry, irritated or worse yet, cause an allergic reaction. Try to use fragrance-free products on your skin whenever you can.

Soaps and Cleansers

Soap, as you may already know, is great for cleaning the hands and even better at drying out our skin! Soaps can be filled with lots of harsh or irritating ingredients that really affect the moisture of our skin – fragrance is another culprit here. Because soaps and cleaners are meant to clean our skin of dirt, oils and impurities, when we strip our skin of oil, it leaves it feeling dry. This means you should look for gentle soaps and cleansers that aren’t filled with harsh ingredients and know which ingredients to avoid.

Allergies or Contact Dermatitis

This one feels like a no-brainer but it’s actually a little more tricky than we think. Using products with certain ingredients can cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis and could create dry and irritated skin. But...the problem is that quite often, people might not even be aware that they are allergic to something and have just thought that they have dry skin in general. Pay attention to what products you use, which products make your skin feel dry and irritated and see if there are any ingredients in common. It’s a great idea to do a skin assessment to try to see if there is an underlying allergy or skin problem that you have just assumed was ‘normal’ for you.

Medical Conditions

If you have an underlying medical condition like eczema, psoriasis or diabetes, for example, you will certainly have unwanted dry, irritated or inflamed skin. Did you know that diabetic dry skin was even a thing? Yep. Just ask someone who is diabetic and I’m sure they will have experienced it.

Ageing

I know, ageing isn’t something most of us want to talk about or admit to, but whether we’re in denial or not, it’s happening! What this means is that as we age, our skin’s oil production decreases and we feel the effects of dryer skin. (I won’t talk about wrinkles and saggy skin here – let’s take this one step at a time!)

What’s the Solution?

For some of the above causes, we’ve given you some tips on what to do – or not to do – to avoid drying out your skin. But there is one thing that you can do for all of the above causes of dry skin that will help keep you from experiencing sudden dry skin conditions. Do you want to know what that is?

Drum roll please....

Use a high-quality, effective moisturizer regularly! Ta-da!

But hold on a minute because I know what you’re thinking – that’s just common sense. But there is a catch. Not all moisturizers will do the job. You really need to shop around and find that moisturizer that will tick all the boxes. It needs to be fragrance-free, free of any harsh or irritating ingredients that could cause contact dermatitis or an allergic reaction, gentle on your skin so you can use it every day, but most of all, you want it to help long term with healing and protecting your skin and not just provide temporary relief.

Suddenly it’s not that easy to find that perfect moisturizer for your skin’s needs. However, to make the task a lot easier on you, I’ll let you in on a little secret: Skin MD Natural ticks all these boxes if you’re looking to take care of the skin on your face or your body while Gloves In A Bottle does the same but for your hands.

Find out what is causing your sudden dry skin and make the change you need to so that you can go back to feeling youthful and as close to perfect as you can!
