Movies about Beauty!

Katya Sobol

Picture it, you’re at home, you want to watch something on the television, rent a movie, watch Netflix, what have you – but it has to be a movie about beauty. You know the kind, one of those movies from your childhood that has everything with growing stronger together. Here is a list of 5 of my favorite films revolving around that topic!

Steel Magnolias

Steel Magnolias, I have a long history with Steel Magnolias. No joke, my mother used to play this at least 1-2 times (Sometimes 5) per week from the ages of 5-13. I can recite certain scenes on cue, at random, and although I hated it as a child love this film as an adult. Steel Magnolias is about a group of strong worded southern women who are friends, that commonly meet at Truvy Jone’s (Dolly Parton) Beauty Salon. The movie starts in Truvy’s Salon as she is getting her hair done by a new apprentice/employee Annelle Dupuy Desoto (Daryl Hannah). In this scene of the movie, many things are established very fluidly, certain issues that currently do, and will, affect the characters of the movie. Thankfully, it is said that the title of the film reveals the strength of the characters, “…delicate as magnolias, but tough as steel” as they will need the strength to get through incredible trials, including a runaway wife, an unforgiving illness, and a bunch of birds in a tree. You meet the main characters, including the Horrible Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley Maclaine), Clairee Belcher kind-hearted millionaire (Olympia Dukakis), the sweet but unendingly strong mother M’Lynn (Sally Field), and the other main characters aforementioned. The movie Steel Magnolias is about friendship, the strength to persevere through all odds, that no matter how dark the storm the sun will come out the other side. Steel Magnolias will always have a special place in my heart and I hope it will yours.

Barbershop

Sure, you’ve been to barber shops, beauty salons, and whatever else you can think of, but you’ll never find a Barbershop quite like this one. Filled with drama, passion and some fiery barbers ready to fulfill your beauty needs. This movie is a shining example of a film about family and respect, and that sometimes all you need is a cut off the top. Starring Ice Cube, Keith David, Anthony Anderson, and many more, this movie is one for the books!

“This is who I am. And whether you believe it or not, I’m gonna be like this tomorrow.”

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything

To Wong, Thanks for Everything is an absolutely fabulous movie about three Drag Queens on their way to be the biggest, baddest, most beautiful Drag Queens the US has ever seen. The movie begins with a few elite Drag Queens, Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) and an adorable novice Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) competing against each other. When Vida wins the race, and later decide to take loser Chi-Chi (Drag Princess) to the ultimate Drag competition on the other side of the country. This film is endearing, about personal growth, coming together as a community, and about destroying social norms! I love To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, it is always a blast to watch, one of my favorite movies simply to watch that era’s biggest action stars proudly acting in Drag.

13 Going on 30

You thought I wouldn’t bring up a coming of age movie? Pff, there are too many that revolve around beauty, I didn’t know where to start. I chose 13 Going on 30, mostly because of the nostalgia, also because it always reverts me back to my teenage years turning me into an ever-growing puddle. 13 Going on 30 is a movie starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. The movie starts when Jennifer Garner is a 13-year-old girl struggling to make friends with the most popular clique in school the 6 Chicks. After a few uncomfortable circumstances involving an embarrassing best friend, and a few stuck-up chicks, we find Jennifer Garner AKA Jenna, locking herself in a closet, chanting to herself, “30, flirty and thriving,” and magically wakes up 17 years later as 30-year-old Jenna, in a nice apartment, with her future blockhead, hockey playing, boyfriend. This movie makes the list because it is about finding your own style, and wearing it proudly, because in a world where no one else can be you, why be anyone else?

“I’ll have a Pina Colada, want to see my ID? I totally have it!”

Hairspray (2007)

Oh, Hairspray, how could we forget about you? This is another movie, and play, that is about accepting yourself in a society that would like nothing to do with you. Portrayed in the 60’s in Baltimore we are exposed to the racism and exclusion of that time. Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) a plump, dance-loving teen wins a competition and a spot on her favorite TV show, upsetting local dance queen Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her mother Velma (Michelle Pfeiffer). We watch as these characters battle to be the best, and battle for inclusion! In a time where the race war was very real and very scary, Tracy Turnblad fights for inclusion in the new show that she won to appear on. Will equality win out? Will the bad guys get what they are asking for? Will beauty standards get turned on their heads? Tune in to this wonderful movie of dance and song.

“You can’t stop my happiness, ‘cuz I like the way I am. And you just can’t stop my knife and fork when I see a Christmas ham! And if you don’t like the way I look, then I just don’t give a damn!”
