Is excessive hand washing making your eczema worse?

Melissa Marsden

Wash your hands. This is one of the best ways to prevent spreading viruses and bacteria to other people and it is a habit we were taught as a small child that needs to be done throughout our life. Now with the fear of catching COVID-19 and bringing it home to a loved one, we are washing our hands even more.

Nowadays it seems like even people who normally have healthy skin are having new and sometimes painful issues with their skin, especially their hands. They are becoming dry, itchy, cracked and inflamed which can lead to open sores.  If people with healthy skin are struggling with dry skin issues, this means people with sensitive skin and who suffer from eczema may be struggling even more.

With excessive hand washing eczema sufferers are struggling even more now with trying to keep their skin healthy. If you struggle with eczema, you know it knows no boundaries. It can affect any part of the body and having eczema on your hands is not only inconvenient it can be embarrassing as well.  Hand eczema is not uncommon and recently it is becoming more and more of a medical issue.  Part of the reason there are more cases of hand eczema is because most of us are not used to exposing our hands to so much hand washing, and when you start to excessively over wash your hands you actually risk breaking down and damaging your skin barrier.

Your skin barrier is the outer layer of your skin and it is what protects and locks moisture into your skin. And when your skin barrier becomes damaged this is what causes your eczema symptoms, like the dry itchy skin to become more troublesome. This is why it is so important for those who suffer from eczema to work on healing their skin barrier. Eczema can deprive your skin from the moisture it craves so much. Creating a consistent routine that prevents interactions with your eczema triggers and gets moisture back into your skin is vital.

Using a moisturizer like Gloves In A Bottle shielding lotion throughout your day can help with healing your skin barrier.  Shielding lotions work differently; they bond with your outer layer of skin creating a protective barrier that in simple words keeps the bad stuff out and good stuff in. This protective barrier now allows your skin and your skin barrier to start healing and get moisture back into the deeper levels of your skin.

Remember there is no instant fix for your eczema but taking care of your skin with a shielding lotion is the right step that can help your skin heal and with a little special care, help keep your eczema under control.
