Are Your Eczema Treatment Products Endangering Your Health?

You may have read the recent news stories warning about prolonged use of skin whitening creams containing clobetasol, a powerful generic corticosteroid used in creams and ointments formulated to treat severe dry skin, psoriasis and eczema. I don’t know how many people use these skin whiteners, but I do know that it’s not unusual for eczema sufferers to use this type of medication for years on end, and they are at risk. Fortunately, there are other options: thousands of doctors are now recommending a shielding lotion as safe, effective eczema treatment.

The problems with clobetasol came to light when a woman who had been using one of the creams for seven years – labels advise not using them longer than 14 days without your doctor’s approval - fell ill. After much investigation, doctors finally discovered that she’d been using the clobetasol cream and realized it was the source of her illness. She was very sick – severe obesity, muscle weakness and thin, bruised, striped skin. All of which can be caused by steroids.

Her case is obviously extreme – she’d been applying about three ounces of the cream every week for seven years – but it is nevertheless an indication of how steroidal skin treatment products can affect our overall health.

Shielding lotion, a non-toxic breakthrough in eczema treatment, has been used very successfully. A good shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a protective layer that locks in moisture and keeps out the environmental and household chemicals that are so often responsible for or exacerbate problem skin.

“We have achieved good results with shielding lotion such that the patients have been able to stop their medications and continue only with the shielding lotion to control their hand eczema condition,“ said Dr. Peter Helton, a dermatologist practicing in Newport Beach, California. Dr. Lisa Benest has had similar results: “Often our best indicator that the shielding lotion worked effectively is the fact that they did not come back to the office for another visit – the condition cleared right up.”

Shielding lotion works with the body’s own defenses – it protects the skin so the skin can heal itself.

It is possible that millions of men, women and children are unknowingly suffering the ill effects of traditional treatment products. If you don’t want to take that risk, give shielding lotion a try – it may be all the eczema treatment you need, and you won’t be endangering your overall health when you use it.
