Revolutionary Dry Skin and Eczema Treatment /– Clean Your Desk

10/12/2006

Your desk may look clean to the naked eye, but the allergens and pathogens that abound in the office ecosystem are a constant irritant and are often the cause of dry skin and eczema. Thousands of doctors now recommend a shielding lotion for dry skin and eczema treatment and prevention, but here are some little known facts about sources of skin problems lurking unseen before your eyes every day from 9 to 5.

Carpeting – Anthrenus flavipes, the carpet beetle, lives and breeds in rugs. The tiny larvae are segmented and break apart, leaving highly allergenic fragments that cause dry skin and eczema.

Office chairs – Dust mites, also known as a source of dry skin, eczema and asthma, thrive in the warm, moist cloth of a chair that is occupied for hours on end.

Desks – As you work at your desk you cover it with dead skin cells - a tasty treat for our little friends.

Keyboards – Your keyboard is a veritable treasure-trove for insects. Flies lay their eggs between the warm, moist keys and other insects feed on the dead skin cells and hair invariably being shed. Turn your keyboard upside down and shake it if you have any doubt. If you eat at your desk, crumbs and old coffee cups will also draw insects.

Monitors – While you may not have many crumbs land on your monitor, the static environment attracts air-borne allergens and pathogens like a magnet.

Charles Gerba, professor of Microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, investigated microbes in the workplace. Samples from offices, cubicles and conference rooms in five climatically diverse U.S. locations all showed the same results - office environments have 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, and are a teeming mass of allergens and pathogens that cause dry skin, eczema, asthma and other disease.

What can you do about it? Giving your office a good weekly clean will make it a less attractive environment for the culprits. Vacuum carpets and chairs and wipe down your desk, keyboard and other surfaces with alcohol.

However, as there’s no way to completely prevent the build-up, cleaning can’t be your only line of defense - you also need a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a protective layer that locks in the skin’s natural moisture and keeps out irritants.

Protecting yourself at work with this simple regimen for dry skin and eczema treatment and prevention will make your work environment more pleasant, and you won’t spend your weekends wondering what to do about your skin problems!
