Winter Skin Care Heralded by National Healthy Skin Month10/31/2006 November has been deemed National Healthy Skin Month by the American Academy of Dermatology. No doubt, this is related to the changing season and the anticipated cold weather, indoor heating and harsh, dry winds. However, while there are definite differences in both indoor and outdoor condition from season to season, the line that separates winter and summer skin care is starting to blur – especially when it comes to dry skin treatment and prevention. In truth, the same dry skin care basics apply no matter the weather. Let’s review them:
The most significant difference between the seasons, as it relates to skin care, is the level of moisture in the air. Dry winter air is made drier still by indoor heating. Basically, there is nowhere you can go to get relief! Dermatologists often recommend switching from lotion to cream-based skin care products during winter. Creams are thicker and are therefore supposed to guard against moisture loss. However, most of these creams do not fill the bill. They usually contain harsh and drying chemicals and, instead of moisturizing the skin, they simply make it feel moist. Underneath that surface layer of cream, the skin is still dry. The best solution for moisture loss is a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion treats and prevents dry skin by bonding with the surface layer of the skin to form a protective layer that locks in the skin’s natural moisture while also preventing absorption of drying chemicals and pollutants. Observing the skin care basics above and using a good shielding lotion will ensure your skin stays moist and beautiful throughout the year.
